Illustrierender Inhalt ist nur für solche Fälle vorgesehen, in denen die Illustrationen eine Ergänzung des primären Inhalts (typischerweise Text) darstellen. Besteht die Expression zu einem wesentlichen Teil aus Bildern, die von mindestens ebenso hoher Bedeutung sind wie der Text (z. B. Bildband, Bilderbuch, Comic), so erfassen Sie keinen illustrierenden Inhalt, um die Abbildungen anzugeben, die den Bildband o. Ä. ausmachen. Vergeben Sie stattdessen einen geeigneten Begriff für die <a class="ref" href="P409">Art des Inhalts</a>, z. B. „Bildband" oder „Comic", und erfassen Sie „unbewegtes Bild" als <a class="ref" href="P68">Inhaltstyp</a>. Sind jedoch in der Expression – zusätzlich zu den Abbildungen, die den Bildband o. Ä. ausmachen – noch Illustrationen ergänzenden Charakters enthalten (z. B. Karten oder Notenbeispiele), so können diese als illustrierender Inhalt angegeben werden.
